Brij Pola, Jawai

Located in the surreal boulder-strewn landscape of Bera, the Brij Pola, Jawai pays a tribute to the ecological and cultural harmony of this region. Bera is probably one of the few places in the world where such a high concentration of leopards and humans have lived harmoniously since time immemorial.

With only four apartment-sized luxury tents, a remarkable guest to staff ratio, personalised services, and absolute exclusivity the Brij Pola is one of the best glamping experiences in India. Situated on the fringes of leopard territory the barely-there boundary between the hotel and jungle is exhilarating. The large pool in the middle of the property is an inviting spot all year round. Dining is inspired from the regional cooking style and the nearby indigenous tribes for a more authentic experience. In terms of activities, there’s plenty for everyone – adventure seekers, safari enthusiasts or culture vultures. Jawai and Bera are known for fantastic leopards, panther, hyena and crocodile sightings, while being a winter haven for migratory birds including flamingos. Naturalist-led tours, sumptuous repasts and sundowners in exquisite locales, ancient temple visits and quaint village experiences make for an unforgettable stay.

The traditional meals at Brij Jawi are fresh with locally sourced ingredients and inspired by the regional cooking style. It is not just the variety of food that’s fabulous but also the location of the meals: from a hearty made-to-order breakfast at the Jawai Dam to a jungle safari breakfast and lunch at an agricultural farm to sundowner high tea on the hills. The meals are customised according to guests’ tastes and preferences.

The lodge does not offer a spa or fitness center, the emphasis here are the safaris, outdoor experiences, and soaking in the local culture.  The pool in the middle of the lodge is ideal for a relaxing swim after the day’s safaris.

Experiences

The drama of the rocky and arid Jawai landscape was crafted by volcanic lava millions of years ago. When the Jawai Dam was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur, it allowed for rich biodiversity to thrive here. The surreal landscape is also home to leopards, crocodiles, flamingos, and other migratory birds. Exploration in game vehicles and adventure drives across the region to soak in the landscape or to sight the big cats and other wildlife by way of morning and evening safaris are on offer.

The village experiences at Brij Jawai offer guests a peek into the everyday life of this remarkable community including a chance to observe the traditional practice of milk churning and cow milking and enjoy a freshly cooked meal at a villager’s home served outdoors under a rustic thatched roof.

Sustainability and Responsible Tourism

The Brij Group of Hotels was inspired by Babu Brijpal Das Ji, a trailblazer in the Indian tourism history and is now helmed by his great-grandchildren. The group endeavours to celebrate local arts, crafts, culture and people across the hotels that are located in unexplored destinations. An important mission in the family has been to create an ecosystem for sustainable tourism. In an attempt to help protect habitats and uplift and empower local communities to preserve their cultural heritage, the properties have a ‘zero-kilometre’ concept. The concept ensures the use of locally sourced materials and design in terms of architecture, while home-grown or locally sourced ingredients and traditional recipes is featured in the cuisine offered. The camp works closely with an animal welfare charity named ‘Help in Suffering’, to source the camp’s animal-themed bedsheets.
